PRHA’s Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCVP) (formerly known as Section 8) assists very low income families the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments.

PRHA's HCV Program is comprised of more than 350 rental property owners (landlords) who participate in our Tenant Based Rental Assistance program. Currently there are 737 famililies receiving HCV housing assistance.

Rental propoerty owners participating in our HCV progam have the same rights and responsibilities as any landlord. They can screen and select tenants, use their own lease, or have the option of collecting a security deposit before a tenant move in, collect rent from the tenant, maintain their property and perform lease enforcement. It is required by PRHA that a copy of all notices sent to tenants be sent to our Agency.

Landlords can visit our office to list vacant units for referral to tenants with vouchers. However, listing a unit with our Agency is not a commitment to rent the unit to a tenant with housing assistance.

If you are already in the Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) and want to transfer to Petersburg, Virginia, please submit a Request to Transfer to your current housing authority. Upon determination of your eligiblity to transfer, you will be forwarded your portability package to PRHA. Once you receive your package, please contact our office to schedule an appointment. It is our goal to schedule an appointment with you within 2 weeks of you contacting our office.
